Caryn C. Masutomi
Throughout her formative years, Caryn’s mother, an orthopaedic nurse, was her mentor and inspiration. She taught Caryn her love of medicine and frequently discussed her cases, building a passion for service in her young daughter. Caryn has always desired to help others and grew into who she is with that same childhood goal in mind. This passion, paired with Caryn’s affinity for adrenaline-inducing activities — riding stunt and race motorcycles, diving with sharks, and downhill skiing among them — guided her career path from volunteer firefighter at 17 to offshore paramedic to a trauma intensive care nurse, and now an orthopaedic nurse practitioner.
Her first impression of GBO was as a patient when she was treated for an elbow injury. From that first experience, she knew she wanted to practice medicine as part of the GBO team. She is honored to have the opportunity to support people in their healing at the practice she describes as Ohana — a Hawaiian word meaning family.
Born and raised in Texas, Caryn spent most of her adult life in Hawaii before moving to Reno for her trauma training and to get her family closer to the mountains. When she’s not helping patients in the orthopaedic clinic, Caryn can be found ski patrolling, promoting wildlife preservation and rescue, riding her Ducati, scuba diving, and going on adventures around the Sierras with her family.
